Hamlin Wins Soggy Martinsville
April 1, 2008 - Perhaps, it was poetic justice that Denny Hamlin won Sunday afternoon at Martinsville after losing a few weeks ago with a sputtering Toyota at Bristol with one to go.
It looked for a while like deja vu for Jeff Burton running second to Hamlin in the waning laps of a race, this one a very cold and dreary day with a constant slight drizzle at the paperclip.
But, Hamlins car stayed fast to the stripe, holding on to claim his fourth win, this time over a very hard charging Jeff Gordon in the final few laps.
The race started with Gordon on the pole (his 65th career) seventh at the half-mile track, going on to lead many laps until an early multi-car wreck left the four-time champion with no where to go.
Two pit stops later for repairs, Gordon rejoined the field deep in the pack, but managed to get back out front some 200 laps later, taking the lead from teammates Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
All four Hendrick drivers including Casey Mears spent time among the top five before days end. The top five finishers were Gordon, Burton, Johnson and Tony Stewart. Mears wound up seventh.
Points leader Kyle Busch had a tough day making several bad on track decisions and having the rear end of his Toyota break sent him down to fifth in the points, the result of a 38th place finish.
Burtons latest top five run has the Virginia driver leave the Virginia track with the points lead, yet only 39 over teammate Kevin Harvick and 60 over Greg Biffle.
The racing weekend started with lots of bumpin and bangin in Saturday afternoons Craftsman truck race at Martinsville. When the smoke cleared and while cars were still spinning out of control, short track ace Dennis Setzer nailed down his third truck win, this one in Dodge.
Earlier in the run, Ron Hornaday beat his way to the front as did Kyle Busch, but it was Setzer with the strong horse on the day leading the most laps.
On the final circuit, Johnny Benson was running second with Busch thirs when Busch tapped Benson in turn 3, spinning Benson and himself, both finishing way down the list while the pack motored by. Once again Busch is not making any friends on or off the racetrack and I predict someone will shorten up the nose on his face sooner than later with his on-track antics.
Of particular interest in this race was Chrissy Wallace making her truck debut. The 19-year-old daughter of race Mike Wallace started 35th and finished a very credible 18th. More races are planned for the young driver.
The Cup and Nationwide teams move on to the wide open Texas Speedway this weekend.
Open Wheel News - The Indy Racing League held their season opener at Homestead Speedway with Scott Dixon besting Tony Kanaan who, while leading lightly hit a spinning back marker, but ended his shot at the win late in the go.
Marco Andretti took an impressive second with Dan Wheldon third.
There were eight newcomers from the Champ car ranks with most having a hard time dealing with the roundy-round concept. The majority of the drivers either crashed, broke or dropped out, a few taking out top runners inadvertently. Theyve got a ways to go to catch up with the experience of the IRL regulars. Several of the newbees were simply rolling chicanes for the rest of the field, being lapped often.
From Rumorville - There are still a lot of conversations involving a Roush Fenway part (a sway bar) being taken by a Toyota team (Michael Waltrip Racing) and not returned or informed of (for six months) until accusations were flying by Jack Roush. Some people say its no big deal, I say it is what do you think? Drop me a line.
--- Greg Biffle is said to be 90% sure he will return to RFR for next year and beyond. Contract negotiations are still under way.
--- Dont count out Jacque Villenueve from returning to Bill Davis Racing Cup action before the year is out. The world champion is said to be taking part in some of the Speedcar racing overseas while still working on obtaining backing to re-enter the taxi-cab set.
Did you know? What drivers have won the Daytona 500 and the championship in the same year? Well, the list is short with only Richard and Lee Petty, Cale Yarborough, Jeff Gordon and most recently, Jimmie Johnson in 2006 taking the dubious honors.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will have the results from NASCAR Cup and Nationwide runs at Texas, round two news from the IRL and more racing news from around the globe.

Wimmer Winner at Nashville
March 25, 2008 - NASCAR driver Scott Wimmer has seemingly been on the back burner. Yes, he and teammate Jeff Burton won the Busch championship (owners) last year, but Wimmer had not been in the winners circle for nearly five years.
It was time. Hes been competitive and patient, all ingredients necessary to get a win.
On Saturday afternoon at the 1.3-mile Tennessee Nashville SuperSpeedway, Kyle Busch appeared to finally have a lock on game, set, match, or in NASCAR lingo, the pole, most laps led and the trophy all but won.
But, for the fourth week in a row, something derailed Mr. Personality (Ill get back to that name later) as he spun away his lead overt Clint Bowyer and Wimmer not far from the end.
With Wimmer getting up on the wheel, the ex-Cupper moved on by his teammate Bowyer and went on to capture his first win while driving for Childress Racing.
Rounding out the top five in what was pretty much a ho-hum race were the cars of Bowyer, Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski and Kelly Bires.
Bowyers latest finish elevates him atop the points, yet only 11 ahead of current champ Edwards.
In regards to Busch, his falling out of races by his own hand or not, leads him to stomp out of the facility immediately with several reporters in tow. The on-the-run interviews and smug attitude answers to reporters questions further illustrates the 22-year-olds immaturity. Some of his on- track swerving will probably lead to a wake up call, ala his brother, Kurt with punched in face episodes just ask Jimmy Spencer and Tony Stewart who their favorite punching bag is.
Can the young Busch drive a race car? Oh, yeah, Ill grant you that, he can drive the wheels off most anything, but as far as being the whole big picture as a marketable friendly entity? Hes got a long way to go. Ive taken polls while announcing at local tracks over the years as to the fans favorite and neither of the Busch boys would have a problem with their fan clubs meeting in a closet size room.
This week, the Craftsman trucks and Sprint Cuppers visit the tough flat half-mile at Martinsville.
Formula One News - After Ferrari suffered only a one point day between two drivers in the opening round last week, they were surely looking for redemption.
They got some not as much as they would have liked, but had to be pleased with Kimi Raikkonens winning performance in the oppressive heat of Malaysia on Sunday.
His teammate Felipe Massa started the weekend off by taking the pole but spun away any chance while out front end of day.
Robert Kubica nailed down a career best second in front of Heikki Kovalainen.
Points leader Lewis Hamilton wound up fifth but is still out front of the points chase with Kimi second.
From Rumorville - BAM joining forces? Yes, that one-car Cup team consisting of the No. 49 with various drivers behind the wheel may wind up a stronger item by joining forces with the likes of Team Petty or Bill Davis Racing.
Once again the rising cost of racing forces teams to reorganize read, raise more capital and resources.
--- Road race ace Boris Said has picked up a couple of races in the Nationwide series. The brillo-haired talented driver will replace Bobby Hamilton Jr for the two left and rights, those being in Canada and Mexico. Personally, I dont understand why you would take out one of the best Nationwide drivers sitting around the top ten and put in the specialist. Good for the team perhaps in owner points, but pretty much destroys a top ten points run for Hamilton Jr.
Did you know? What drivers are among the most successful at Martinsville Speedway? Jeff Gordon has won seven times at the Virginia short track, but Richard Petty has a dozen grandfather clocks to show for his efforts. The King also represents the driver with the most top 5s with 30 and the most top 10s at 37. Throw in eight poles coveted by Darrell Waltrip and you have the dynamic trio of success.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will have the results from NASCAR at Martinsville, round one news from the IRL and more racing news from around the globe.

Childress Cars Win Wild Ending at Bristol
March 18, 2008 - After leading most of the laps at the always tough Bristol Speedway, Tony Stewart appeared to be well on his way to his latest Cup win.
But, once again, it aint over til the checkers wave. With five to go, Stewart is out front, yet is passed by teammate Denny Hamlin. He was still within striking distance of getting the lead back until he got dumped by his buddy Kevin Harvick. Stewart went fairly hard into the wall backwards, yet able to wind up 14th overall.
That set up a green-white-checker with Jeff Burton in second.
Hamlin made a good start, then faltered on the front stretch allowing Burton to zoom by and take the win with Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Greg Biffle and Dale Earnhardt Jr wrapping up the top five.
Hendrick boys Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon struggled all day with set up, both trying many different adjustments, but none seemed to be effective in getting among the top ten.
They wound up 20th and 11th respectively which puts them one point apart at 13th and 14th in points.
Veteran racer Dale Jarrett made his final start in a points race coming out 34th in the final results.
Points leader Kyle Busch made it to the front only to have a steering problem send him into fence mid-race. He still managed to finish 19th and stay on top of the charts, but only by 24 over Biffle.
The Cup and Craftsman trucks are off this week for Easter, while the Nationwide gang heads to Nashville SuperSpeedway on Saturday.
Clint Bowyer ran hard and strong from the drop of the flag in Saturdays Nationwide race at Bristol.
Throw in the threat of inclement weather and the boys ran like it was the last lap every lap. From around lap 100, the crews reminded their drivers the threat of rain was near. Bowyer got up on the wheel and stayed out front despite the hard charging Kasey Kahne and others looking to get out front.
Race officials pulled the plug on this one by lap 171 of a scheduled 300, giving Bowyer his first win of the year, this one in front of Kahne, David Reutimann, Brad Kesolowski and Mike Bliss.
Kyle Busch dropped out early when his car was barely clipped by a spinning Martin Truex Jr. The non-personable driver immediately left the track in a huff, avoiding reporters.
Harvicks seventh place finish was good enough to put him atop the points, some 49 points ahead of Bowyer and 50 ahead of reigning champ Carl Edwards.
Open Wheel News - Some things never change. Lewis Hamilton picked up just where he left off by dominating the Formula One opening round in Australia.
From the drop of the flag, the young Brit took off and left the pack in the dust, seemingly never putting a wheel wrong all day en route to his fifth career win. Capping off the top five were the cars of Nick Heidfeld, Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso and Heikki Kovalainen. The lack of traction control made the racing more exciting.
From Rumorville - Dont look now, but there appears to be some more points swapping about to occur in the Cup ranks. One swap is more bizarre than the next. With Kyle Petty slugging around the tracks each week, its no wonder the veteran racer is sitting 40th in points. Id expect Team Petty to swap teammate Bobby Labontes 14th place points with Kyles 40th spot after this weekend.
Then, if you thought it wasnt fair for Kurt Buschs points to go to ex-open-wheel racer Sam Hornish Jr allowing him to get into the first five races, how about they are about to switch points AGAIN! this time swapping Kurts 10th place standing with Sams 36th.
I think this whole process is wrong, wrong, wrong! You should have to earn the standings, not be handed them. What do you think? Drop me a line.
--- Ever since Tony Stewart made his feelings known about how bad he felt the Goodyear tires were at Atlanta, other drivers have chimed in with similar comments. Next topic of conversation has people speaking of the need for a drivers union or at least a panel of drivers to represent the majority. Interesting .
Did you know? That Sundays Cup results had a number of honorable mentions. It was the first win for Chevy this season, something Chevy has not been able to do for four races, an unusual situation based on last years stats for sure. It was also only the second time in NASCAR history with starting 43 cars that all 43 were running at the end of the race.
And for the first time in the long history of Childress Racing that the team finished 1-2-3 in any kind of NASCAR race.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will review the action from the Nationwide series and more racing news from around the globe.

Busch Snickers First Toyota Win
March 11, 2008 - It was only a matter of time.
Kyle Busch has been the talk of the pits both good and bad for weeks know, fast and successful in whatever he drove.
He started the weekend with a convincing win among the Craftsman truckers. Then, the 22-year-old driver led a good portion of the Nationwide race before succumbing to a right front flat and into the fence.
When the green flag fell on the high banks of Atlanta on Sunday, Jeff Gordon was leading, but it wasnt long before the Toyota of Busch led most of the laps before lightly smacking fence.
On a late race restart, the Snicker's Toyota left the pits first and went on to claim Toyotas very first NASCAR Cup race win. Not since 1954 has a foreign car maker taken the accolades of a NASCAR win. Al Keller in his Jaguar racer took the top spot at a racetrack in New Jersey.
I predicted months ago the youngest Gibbs driver would pick up their first Cup win, this one with teammate Tony Stewarts help coming in second and playing body guard over the final circuits.
You see Greg Biffle was among the fastest cars on the track during the final segment, only to seemingly be held up by Stewart while on his way to the front.
Capping the top five in this one were the cars of Dale Earnhardt Jr (led the early laps), Biffle and Jeff Gordon. Of notable interest were the runs by Clint Bowyer, who led for a while and finished behind Gordon with Brian Vickers Toyota finishing in ninth and sitting an amazing ninth in points. What a difference a year makes.
Carl Edwards appeared to be on his way to a three peat winning situation with a comfortable lead well in hand. This is all went up in smoke with 50 to go. Too bad. He drops out of the top ten to 17th.
Overall, not exactly a great race. The COT cars seem to be a handful to drive especially with rock hard tires on a cold day. The fix? Im up for suggestions. Drop me a line.
--- Had it not been for a right front tire going down, Kyle Busch may have swept the top spots in all of NASCARs premiere divisions. Instead, the ever-steady Matt Kenseth held off Kevin Harvick for his latest Nationwide win.
Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards and Bobby Labonte made up the rest of the top five finishers.
Harvick now leads Edwards by 25 with Busch, David Regan and Clint Bowyer topping the points charts.
--- The Craftsman truck race was dominated by Kyle Busch and Ron Hornaday Jr. When the checkers fell, Busch nailed down his second win of the season and third top five.
Rounding out the top five included Hornaday, Mike Skinner, Matt Crafton and Chad McCumbee.
Busch leaves Georgia with a 72-point lead over Todd Bodine with Hornaday another 50 back of Bodine in third.
Formula One News - The worlds fastest open wheelers begin their 2008 season this weekend in Australia. Reigning F-1 champion and Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen returns with teammate Felipe Massa in the Italian red rockets.
Rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton is back with McLaren teammate Heikki Kovalainen replacing two-time champion Fernando Alonso.
Alonso is now back with Renault, the team he notched his two world titles, although he feels his car is about one second a lap slower right now with the McClarens and Ferraris topping the pre-season testing charts.
The opening round is a twisty road course in Australia. Check your local Speed TV listings in your area starting with a Thursday night practice.
From Rumorville - Pettys out? Well not exactly, but have fallen victim to the high cost of racing by adding a partner to their operation. Petty follows suit akin to Roush and Evernham taking on business partners. You can expect more details this week with announcements from one of NASCARs oldest teams. I understand one of the largest problems was coming up with a name agreeable to both sides and keeping alive the Petty name.
--- Look for Mike Skinner to drive in three more Cup races for team Red Bull and the No. 84 Toyota. A.J. Almendinger is still slated to be their driver after Skinners four runs.
Did you know? After struggling with his car for the past two weeks, Tony Stewart proclaimed in post-race interviews that he hates Goodyear so much that he is dismounting any Goodyears on his personal cars and switching them to Firestones. Funny stuff. No Christmas card from Goodyear to Tony this year.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will have the results from NASCAR in the Bristol battlegrounds, along with more racing news from around the globe.

Edwards Rolls a seven in Las Vegas
March 4, 2008 - The Toyota of Kyle Busch led the opening laps of the Cup race in Las Vegas, but it was the strong running Ford of Carl Edwards that pulled into the winners circle by days end.
For the second week in a row, and ninth in a short career, Edwards put the hammer down on his Office Depot Ford Fusion and earned his latest win for Roush-Fenway Motorsports.
The action in this one really heated up when Edwards (at 52 laps to go) was forced to the back of the pack for a pit road violation involving a runaway tire. The hard driving pilot roared back from 17th to lead after taking the top spot from teammate Matt Kenseth.
A late race restart found Edwards out front, Dale Earnhardt Jr second, followed by Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon. Dale Jr appeared to slow slightly (spinning tires), which prompted Kenseth to the outside and Gordon to the low side for the double pass.
When they finished the pass, they touched slightly sending both in a spin. The big difference was Kenseths ability to drive away with just a couple of flats (finishing 20th). Gordon on the other hand, smacked the inside wall opening where the cars can exit the racing surface no safe walls and a bad angle hit found the four-time champ hitting very hard, lifting the rear wheels of the car off the ground.
Shaken, but OK, Gordon emerged from the care center with comments concerning his not wanting to be on the bottom of the track as his car was not working down there. The latest results is his second DNF, sending him down eight spots to 22nd in the big picture.
His teammate (Jimmie Johnson) and reigning Cup champion didnt have much better results on the day struggling with an ill-handling Lowes Chevy. A 29th place finish sends him down eight spots to 14th. Is the Hendrick COT car domination over?
Blown tires ended several top runners successful runs with a bang. Tony Stewart had a right front tire let go, gingerly exited the race car a bit dazed and out of the show. The same ugly fate befell Robby Gordon and Kurt Busch, winding up deep in the final rundown.
Is there a problem with the hardness of the tires, or is it the setup on the car in some cases being too radical?
Other notables included Kyle Buschs fall from grace, despite a pole and good start, the Toyota driver wound up 11th, yet remains second to Edwards by only 21 points.
Capping off the top five finishers were the cars of Dale Jr, Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton.
As a result, Dale Jr moved up 13 spots in points to sit 10th while Stewart and Kurt Busch dropped eight places to 11th and 12th respectively.
Earlier in the weekends lineup, the Nationwide race turned out to be a real barn burner in the final laps.
Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski, Mark Martin and Greg Biffle all had visions of grandeur basking in victory lane. With just a handful of laps remaining, Martin accidentally got into Edwards which took out Martins teammate Kesolowski in the process.
Martin was able to hold off Biffle and the rest of the pack to claim his record breaking 48th trophy and first series win in nearly three years.
Rounding out the rest of the top five finishers included Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick and Dave Stremme.
Edwards appreciated Martin apologizing in victory lane before celebrating, knowing all the while, the circumstance was very un-Mark-like.
The reigning series champion still came out on the lead lap, hitting the books with a 14th place finish, good enough for fourth in the standings, yet first among the full-timers.
Tony Stewart ran strong but faded late. His day ended by sliding up into David Reutimann taking the two Toyotas out. Stewart did not return yet Reutimann patched up the car to wind up 25th. Stewart felt that he got in a wreck implying the other car crowded him and they crashed. Same ole Tony. He screws up the other guy is to blame. Someone does take him out as a legitimate payback, the other guy is to blame theres a theme here. I think those anger management sessions have a shelf life time for renewal.
From Rumorville - No. 4 Back? Could there be life after a brief death from the Morgan-McClure headquarters in Abbingdon, VA? Reports indicate McClure has been wooing a few potential clients with no less than six COT cars sitting at the Virginia race shop. Stay tuned.
--- If NASCAR does not reverse their penalties against Robbie Gordon in regards to the discrepancy at Daytona, the fiery owner/driver is talking seriously about doing the Indy500/Coke 600 double duty day. Thatll spice up the weekend.
Did you know? What forms of racing this weeks winner Carl Edwards came from? If you said a lot of dirt track racing, youd be correct. The young man from Missouri won races in Mini-Sprints, IMCA open wheel Modifieds, the Baby Grands on pavement, then moved into Roush Busch and truck deals before landing a full-time Cup ride with the cat in the hat. The rest, as they say, is history.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will have the results from NASCAR in Atlanta, along with more racing news from around the globe. Formula One and IRL starts are right around the corner.

Edwards Takes Marathon California Race
February 26, 2008 - First the race was rain-delayed by several hours, then Michael Waltrips car had an oil line come loose during the pace laps, all in all a sign of things to come, making for a very long day or weekend.
Lap 21 action saw Casey Mears get loose through one of the weepers, and into the fence, taking out Dale Earnhardt Jr, Sam Hornish Jr and Reed Sorenson.
NASCAR and track officials then decided to work on the track in the form of cutting grooves in the asphalt to help dissipate the seeping water. Forty-five minutes later, they resumed action with Jeff Gordon out front and Jimmie Johnson a few seconds back.
Then, the rains came.
NASCAR officials strung the East-coasters along by saying the race would resume at midnight, then 1 a.m., then even 2 a.m .all not to be.
Instead, the race restarted at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon with about 20% of the crowd still in tact. Out front, it was still Hendrick boys Gordon and Johnson with Kyle Busch nearby.
But, the big dog of the day turned out to be Carl Edwards
After the delays, weepers and a few more cautions, Edwards came away with his eighth career win after chasing down Johnson over the final few dozen laps.
The whole affair ended anticlimactically with little action for the final few hours. Others in the top five included Johnson, Gordon, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth.
Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman wound up tenth, now sitting second in the points, only six back of new leader Kyle Busch.
Over on the Nationwide side, the race was delayed from Saturday night to late Monday afternoon. The story there was Toyota, Toyota and Toyota. Tony Stewart led most of the race from the drop of the flag with fellow Toyota drivers David Reutimann and Kyle Busch nearby.
At the checkers, it was Stewart by several seconds over Busch, Kevin Harvick, Reutimann and reigning champion Carl Edwards.
Stewart now sits atop the standings, but is not slated to be full-time whereas Edwards is and currently sits third behind Busch.
The Craftsman trucks were able to get their race in on time on Friday despite most of the weekends activities being rain-delayed. Kyle Busch and Todd Bodine dominated the race with Busch coming out on top for his first win this year.
Rounding out the top five included Bodine, Johnny Benson, Terry Cook and Ron Hornaday Jr.
From Rumorville - Among the many fines handed out from last weeks NASCAR runs at Daytona, the largest and most significant was that of Robby Gordon. Gordons last minute switch from Ford to Dodge led to a factory error in shipping him a nose piece that wasnt quite approved by NASCAR. The result was failing pre-race inspection, a change of the nose and an impressive eighth place finish for a one-car team.
NASCARs response was a $100,000 fine, a loss of 100 points and a crew chief suspension of six weeks. Seems pretty severe for something that never even made it to the racetrack surface, eh?
Well, they have appealed, Dodge has written letters to NASCAR as has sponsor Jim Beam.
The biggest issue with the situation is Gordons drop in points from eighth to 40th, certainly out of the top 35. What do you think of this situation? Drop me a line.
--- It became official late last week with the Indy Racing League and Champ Car open wheel series joining forces for the upcoming season. This is something most open-wheel race fans have been looking for over the past 12 years.
Pre-season testing starts soon and it will be great to see the larger fields and deeper talent pools.
Did you know? What car manufacturer has won the most Cup races in NASCAR? If you guessed Chevy, youd be correct. Over the past 60 years, the American (ha, ha) car maker has racked up 622 wins. Others in the forefront include Ford (583), Dodge (198), Plymouth (191), Pontiac (154), Oldsmobile (115), Mercury (95) and Hudson with 79 checkers. The only foreign manufacturer to land a win was Jaguar way back in 1954. Will that change this year? More than likely.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will have the results from NASCAR in Las Vegas and more racing news from around the globe.

Penske Cars Win Daytona 500 Shocker
February 19, 2008 - Toyotas ran strong, but Dodge dominated the top ten
When all of the predictions were said and done as to who would win this years Daytona 500, the word Dodge was conspicuously missing. Most said it would be a Hendrick Chevy or Gibbs Toyota in the winners circle.
Until the final lap, they would have been correct until teammates Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman bolted past the strong Toyotas of Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch.
After a late caution flag set up a three lap dash-for-cash, it appeared Jeff Burton had a shot of winning. Instead, he was quickly shuffled back with Kyle Busch attempting to make a too low pass on the bottom of the track. Stewart took off out front and it looked for all intentions like the two-time champ had a shot of winning the Great American Race.
Enter the Penske boys. Newman positioned himself right behind Stewart, then moved to the high side with teammate Busch in position to help out.
And help out he did, bumping the Alltel Dodge several times and zooming by Stewart for the drag race to the stripe and the first win for the team in over two years.
For most of the first half of the race, I had all I could do to stay awake with the first mystery caution for debris coming out on lap 80 (there was a second one later on they never showed the debris or even said what it was). Round and round they went with Kyle Busch in the lead then and for most of the race.
So, the Dodge boys took the big prize and six of the top ten spots certainly the sleepers of the race.
Rounding out the top ten for the 500 included Stewart in third, followed by Kyle Busch, Reed Sorenson, Elliot Sadler, Kasey Kahne, Robbie Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr and the first Ford driven by Greg Biffle.
Hendrick champions Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson had days to forget, Gordon with a front suspension failure and Johnson with handling problems and a spin. Gordon wound up 39th and Johnson 27th.
The best part about outside polesitter Michael Waltrips day was his NAPA commercials concerning the wrecked scale models a fan wanted him to sign hilarious! He dropped like a stone back to a 29th place finish.
The opening weekends racing started with some exciting rock em sock em truck racing where Todd Bodine was able to hold off a hard charging Kyle Busch and Johnny Benson for his first Daytona win.
The New York driver proclaimed hed been coming to the Florida track for 20 years and run second, third, been on fire, but never won until Friday night.
Earlier in the race, in fact, very early action saw Busch make a diving move to the bottom of the track tangling with Mike Skinner, setting off a multi-truck wreck sidelining several in the process. Busch can often be a weapon on the track and this race was no exception.
Others in the top five included David Starr and Rick Crawford.
On Saturday afternoon the action continued with the first official Nationwide series 300 mile event. Polesitter Tony Stewart led from flag-to-flag but not without help from teammate and blocker extraordinaire Kyle Busch. The Toyotas proved very strong down the long chutes of Daytona.
Busch wound up second holding off the likes of Dale Earnhardt Jr, Brian Vickers and Matt Kenseth. Reigning champion Carl Edwards finished tenth.
From Rumorville - Dont look now, but theres about to be another Dale Earnhardt Sr movie written and produced. Unlike the previous movie Dale aired on ESPN without the blessing of DEI, this one will have the backing of DEI authorities. Stay tuned.
--- Ex-open wheeler Jacque Villenueve has been removed from his driving duties of the No. 27 Bill Davis Cup car. After failing to qualify for the 500, David has decided to replace the Canadian with Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson on a rotating basis. Supposedly, if Villenueve comes up with the backing, hell return behind the wheel. Jacque dont hold your breath.
--- Elliotts last hoorah! Living legend Bill Elliott recently stated that 2008 will be his final year of racing. After 33 years, the one- time fan favorite will hang up his helmet in favor of spending more time with his family, most notably his 12-year-old son Chase.
Did you know? The car manufacturer car count difference between this years 500 and last years? Check out these stats . 2007 - Chevy - 19, Ford - 10, Toyota - 4 and Dodge - 10. 2008 - Chevy - 16, Ford, - 7, Toyota - 9 and Dodge - 11. what a difference a year makes. Obviously the biggest change is the number of Toyotas with more than double the first year.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will have the results from NASCAR in California and more racing news from around the globe.

Earnhardt Jr Takes Bud Shootout
Feburary 12, 2008 - 2008 NASCAR Season Openers
What better way to kick off a new relationship than with a win. Dale Earnhardt Jr has been testing well, but the real answers would come after the first round of wheel-to-wheel action. Fans would not be disappointed. NASCARs fan favorite not only won the first 20-lap segment of the Bud Shootout on Saturday night, but went on to win the very exciting final 50-lap segment over a hard charging Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Reed Sorenson.
The overall race was just OK, certainly not the most memorable over the past decade. The cars were extremely bouncy and nervous, something to surely affect the outcome of Sundays 500. The Hendrick boys, those now being Dale Jr, Jimmie, Jeff and Casey Mears all ran towards the front of the second half working together when they could.
On the final lap, Johnson was the one giving Dale Jr a good shot to propel him into the lead ahead of Stewart. Jr was more than thrilled to knock this first race out of the park with a checkers. After 62 race weekends without a win, it was as if to say, see with some decent equipment, I can win.
The first segment saw Johnson and Gordon hang out in the back with ill-handling back-up cars, the results of a multi-car wreck in practice. After the 10-minute break, the two ex-champions returned with much better cars charging to the front seemingly at will.
The Toyotas of Michael Waltrip and Dave Blaney ran strong for a while but faded by races end. I do however look for the Toyotas to be quite strong in this years big race .and more.
Speaking of the 500, the first part of the 500s complicated qualifying took place on Sunday with Jimmie Johnson topping the charts (picking up where they left off last season?) and Waltrip poised to start alongside him.
From the surprise-look-whos-here department were the next two cars of Joe Nemechek and David Reutimann who are guaranteed a starting spot in the 50th edition of the Great American Race.
The rest of the field will be determined on Thursday in what is now called the Duels. These are two 150-mile races to figure out who will start where on Sunday. If you cant catch the live action during the day, set your VCRs or catch the taped replay on Thursday night.
This years competitive points racing starts on Friday night with the Craftsman truck opener followed by the Saturday afternoon Nationwide race.
There are way too many storylines to discuss in either series in this size space .suffice it to say the whole weekend is a dont miss event. Well have a lot to talk about next week. Take note of the driver, sponsor and paint scheme changes in all three premiere divisions.
Winner of this years Daytona 500? All Ill say at this point is a Hendrick Chevy will more than likely pull into victory lane. Fill in your own choice here.
From Rumorville - Just when I was ready to discuss the poor decision by Champ Car officials in regards to not joining up with the Indy Racing League does a late word change the whole idea. It now appears that the Champ Cars and IRL will come together this year with only one little stumbling block remaining.
Besides offering cars, engines and money to entice the racers over to the other side, the IRL will add several key Champ Car dates to the IRL schedule. One very conflicting date has the Long Beach GP and the race in Japan on the same weekend. The last word on this has IRL officials traveling to the land of the rising sun to see what compromise can be made.
In the world of open wheel racing, this is the best news we could hear. No longer are we to endure small car counts with an even shallower talent pool in two different series. Now we should look forward to at least 25 car fields and an upcoming Indy 500 to beat the band.
All I can say is, What took so long?!
Did you know? Who has the most all-time starts in NASCAR Cup competition? If you said Richard Petty, you are absolutely correct. Behind the 1,185 starts for the King is Ricky Rudd with 906 and Dave Marcis with 883. Terry Labonte has notched 851 while the highest start stat for an active driver is Kyle Petty with 814.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will be jam-packed with results from NASCARs big opening weekend from Daytona and more racing news from around the globe.

Testing out West and Bud Shootout
February 5, 2008 - After a week of pre-season testing, this time out West, the NASCAR Cup and Nationwide teams return to this end of the country in preparation of a very busy and what could be a very competitive season.
With numerous driver, sponsor and manufacturer changes, there are many unanswered questions at this time, but the next few weeks should set the tone for 2008.
The recent testing at Daytona, Las Vegas and California Speedways have given us a glimpse into possible results.
So, whos been fast? Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Juan Montoya, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon among the Cuppers with Johnny Benson, David Reutimann and Kyle Busch topping the charts in Nationwide testing.
One theme I see here already are the Toyotas have been fast out of the box. As predicted, the Gibbs Racing drivers, those being Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch and Hamlin have shown to be among the fastest every time theyve hit the pavement. No surprise here and a far cry from results a year ago. Its a safe bet to see a Toyota in a Cup victory lane more than once this year.
--- This years Bud Shootout is also bigger and better than ever with a larger purse and a host of talented Bud Pole winners as eligible entrants.
The driver lineup includes David Gilliland, Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, J.J. Yeley, Jamie McMurray, Dave Blaney, Casey Mears, Reed Sorenson, Dale Earnhardt, Jr, Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Michael Waltrip, Greg Biffle, Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin, Ken Schrader and Bill Elliott (won in 1987).
All of these drivers have either won a pole last year or were a previous winner of this prestigious event.
The event is set for Saturday night starting with the first of two segments, that being a 20-lap run with mandatory pitstops for all. Then, theres a 50-lap dash for cash with a side-by-side restart. If there was ever a gloves off event, this one is it. The engines, cars and general mind set is to bring back the steering wheel or trophy, meaning be fast or crash do whatever it takes to win this big bucks event.
The history of this show has produced many memorable finishes, none the least of comes to mind involving Rusty Wallace and Darrell Waltrip, where Wallace bumped Waltrip out of the way late in the go. Wallace went on to win and the crews erupted into confrontation as the cars entered the pits.
Last year, Tony Stewart won his third Bud Shootout and the $200,000 plus that goes along with it. This is a non-points race, but one NOT to miss. Well compare notes next week.
From Rumorville - Yates driver David Gilliland finally has a sponsor on his car for at least the first six races, that being freecreditreport.com. The team is also working hard on teammate Travis Kvapil in the No. 28 with hopes of announcing something soon in the form of sponsorship.
--- Sweet idea .Those Dale Earnhardt fans should be excited to hear about four special edition candy bars to be distributed by Hershey. The chocolate bars will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Daytona 500 and the 10th anniversary of the Dale Sr.s 1998 Daytona 500 win. Fans can find out more information about these and a chance to donate money to the Dale Earnhardt Foundation at www.hersheys.com/dale .
--- Robby Gordon has made a late change (from Ford) to Dodge by combining forces with Gillett-Evernham Motorsports. These one car teams need to do whatever it takes to be competitive.
Did you know? This years Daytona 500 will have a very healthy $18 million purse. That equates to $1.4 million awarded to the winner with $1 million to second and $750,000 to third. Why, just taking the green flag in this one and the check will be in excess of $233,000!!
This is certainly a far cry from the first 500 where Lee Petty won a paltry $19,000 and the last place driver walked away with a hundred bucks for his trouble.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will discuss the results of the Bud Shootout and more racing news from around the globe.

Ganassi Team Takes Third Rolex 24 Trophy
January 29, 2008 - Scott Pruett wheeled the winning Lexus/Riley race car across the line at Daytona International Speedway after the grueling 24 hour show ended. His teammates Juan Pablo Montoya, Memo Rojas and Dario Franchitti created an impressive talent combination in notching a third consecutive win for Team Ganassi, breaking the old record of only back-to-backer checkers.
After completing nearly 700 laps at a rough average of 120 mph, the whole team performed as a well-oiled machine in racking up this very prestigious win in the world of endurance competition.
Other names youll probably recognize such as Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch and AJ Almendinger spent long segments behind the wheel of other cars finishing second, third and 14th overall respectively.
An unusual amount of caution periods, 24 in all for 95 laps slowed down the action and kept the overall lap count down with only 18 hours of green flag action.
If you caught any of the 17 hours of live coverage, you saw a well-covered event with many camera angles and pit reporters keeping us up with the latest on and off track news.
Some of those teams performed some minor miracles in taking nearly destroyed cars back to on-track condition in less than 20 minutes .Yeomen work for sure!
Pruett drove in the fastest class known as Daytona Prototypes, finishing two laps ahead of the nearest competitor.
In the other division known as GT, the ranks are filled with mostly Porsches, Mazda RX-8s and a handful of Corvettes, Mustangs and Ferraris.
Ordinarily there is a long line of Porsches topping the charts. This year, the Mazda RX-8 of Sylvan Tremblay stomped the German juggernaut with an eight lap lead at the stripe. Very impressive! It will be interesting to see if this trend continues throughout the season.
Nationwide Testing last week at Daytona saw Eric Darnell top the charts in his Roush-Fenway Ford Fusion. Others topping the charts included Tony Raines, Chase Miller, Steve Wallace (when he wasnt crashing into chain link fences in the pits) and Scott Wimmer.
This week, the Sprint Cup teams and Nationwide teams test at Las Vegas. Then, during this Western swing of pre-season testing, the Cup teams will test at California Speedway later in the week using Wednesday as a travel day.
From Rumorville - There are several new rules for Sprint Cup racing this year starting with two rules on pit lane. Teams will no longer have the luxury of rolling tires across the pits to the wall for someone to catch. From now on, a crewman will have to control the tire from halfway out to the wall. The other new pit lane rules deals with when a car stalls. You used to see crews pushing cars often the length of pit lane to get a car started. No more crews will have only three pit spots to get the car going, or push it back to their pit box.
--- Kenny Wallace has finally landed a full-time gig for 2008, this one in a Fitz Racing Dodge. Sponsor, numbers and crew chief details are still being worked out.
--- More rule changes are in store for the NHRA drag racers including qualifying where 12 drivers will be locked in on the first day of qualifying, yet four more can be added with fast times on the final day.
--- Owner of the Indy Racing League, Tony George, has made the Champ Car Series participants a very tempting offer in an effort to once again unify American open wheel racing. George is offering free Honda engines and free cars along with adding five of their scheduled dates. The deal is on the table for 2008, but it might be too late to put it all together where 2009 might be more feasible. This is a generous offer and many of us will be holding our breaths to hear the answer. What do you think? Should the two rejoin forces or just let the Champ Car series die away, which is very close to happening with a very small driver lineup and a terrible TV package set for this year. Drop me a line and let me know.
Did you know? Which track on the NASCAR circuit has the largest seating capacity? If you said Indianapolis with 252,000, you are correct. Other tracks with large seating numbers include Lowes Motor Speedway (171,000), Daytona (165,000), Bristol (160,000) and Texas (155,000). At the other end of the spectrum is Watkins Glen with only 41,000 permanent seats, although many more camp throughout the vast infield.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will discuss the results of pre-season Sprint Cup and Nationwide testing from Las Vegas and California, and more racing news from around the globe.

Gentlemen, Start Your 2008 Engines
January 22, 2008 - I know its been a long time (couple of months) since weve seen some competitive racing and youre starting to watch reruns of anything connected with wheels turning.
Well, as of this weekend, thats all about to change.
The racing season kicks off in Daytona with the famed Rolex 24 race. For those of you not familiar with this left and right classic, the race takes place on the roadcourse section of Daytona and lasts two trips around the clock or 24 hours.
About 80 assorted hand built sports cars in several divisions will take the green flag on Saturday afternoon and circulate non-stop for the scheduled 24 hours to determine the winner.
The drivers roster of the 47th Rolex 24 is a whos who in racing, from stock car champions Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch along with NASCAR drivers Juan Pablo Montoya, AJ Almendinger and Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti to world class drivers Scott Pruett, Wayne Taylor and a host of international talent.
There will be lost of pitstops, driver changes, late night wrecks, possibly some weather challenges all jammed into a grueling 24 hour time slot.
FOX and Speed TV are covering the race with extensive live coverage (17 hours) morning, noon and night. Ive watched many hours of this event before and Speed does an excellent job of coverage with in-depth interviews and many behind the scenes tid bits.
When the Rolex 24 is over, well have more testing to check out followed by the Bud Shootout on Sat., Feb 9th, the Gatorade Duels on Thurs., Feb 14th, which is the precursor to the really big show, the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 17th.
Pre-Season Testing - The second week of scheduled Sprint Cup testing wrapped up last week with Dale Earnhardt Jr and Kasey Kahne topping the single car and drafting charts respectively. Other top runners included Dave Blaney, Denny Hamlin and Dario Franchitti. .
Over on the Nationwide (old Busch series) side of pre-season testing, Kyle Buschs Gibbs Toyota Camry topped the charts part of the time as did Johnny Sauter, Tim McCreadie, Carl Edwards, Brad Coleman and David Green.
Nationwide testing continues through Tuesday.
From Rumorville - It appears the Wood Brothers have decided to put veteran racer Bill Elliott behind the wheel for the Daytona 500, then sprinkle driving assignments between Jon Wood and Marcos Ambrose. They did play a pretty good game of inserting Bill into the races when they fell out of the top 35 in points last season.
--- Dont look now, but NASCAR may be playing with the age restrictions as far as the Sprint Cup series is concerned. The minimum age sits at 18 right now, but there have been several conversations lately in regards to changing the requirements to 21. That certainly would put a crimp in two rising stars looking to break in the Cup ranks this year, namely Joey Lagano and Brad Coleman. What do you think about this idea? Is 18 too young to compete in the bigs? Drop me a line.
--- Veteran racer Sterling Marlin will be driving for the No. 09 Phoenix Racing Chevy this year in about seven Cup races. Marlin did inform his team however, if they cant pick up the pace (46th fastest) from last weeks testing, they might as well save money and stay home as he gives them a slim chance in getting in the field. He also cited how fast the Toyotas were out of the box.
Did you know? Which Cup drivers that ran a part
or full-time schedule in 07 are currently on the outside looking in? Heres the
list
Mike Bliss, Ward Burton, Jeff Green, Kevin Lepage, Tony Raines,
Johnny Sauter, Ken Schrader, David Stremme and Kenny Wallace. For guys like Raines, Sauter
and Stremme, theyve gotten the short end of the stick for one reason or another,
like Stremme being ousted to accommodate ex-open wheeler Franchitti.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will discuss the results of Nationwide Series pre-season testing from Daytona, results from the Rolex 24 race and more racing news from around the globe.

2008 Sprint Cup Team Lineups (Part 6)
January 15, 2008 - Here is the final round of a six-part series to describe the 2008 Sprint Cup team lineups for next season. There are lots of wholesale changes between drivers, sponsors and car makes, so take notes and enjoy some of my predictions:
No. 83 - This Toyota team owned by Red Bull Racing will have Brian Vickers back in the saddle after a so-so season. His 38th in points finish with five top tens and 23 starts will have to improve for this team to go anywhere. Not out of the realm.
No. 84 - Ex-open wheeler A.J. Almendinger returns behind the wheel of the other Red Bull Toyota despite finishing 43rd in points with only 17 starts and not a top ten to speak of. Ricky Viers remains as crew chief and perhaps with the drivers rookie year out of the way, this team should improve.
No. 88 - Dale Earnhardt Jr gets a new lease on life by leaving DEI and moving into the winningest organization of late, Hendrick Motorsports. Everything is new except his crew chief and friend Tony Eury Jr.
Earnhardt has new sponsors in the form of National Guard, Mountain Dew and Amp energy drink. There are new colors, those being green and white or blue and white along with a very new number, 88.
Performance? Well, there are no more excuses for this fan favorite to perform, read win races and championships. Hes got the best COT cars, engines, resources and even championship winning teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson to work with. Prediction? My crystal ball sees at least one trip to victory lane, but no title this year. What do you think?
No. 96 - J.J. Yeley got the boot from Joe Gibbs Racing and landed at Hall of Fame Racing. The team made a big decision to follow suite of Gibbs Racing and switch to Toyota. Pre-season testing has already seen impressive results from the team. Well see what happens once they hit the regular season of competition.
No. 99 - Carl Edwards returns after a ninth place Cup season that included three wins. The 2007 Busch champion is set to be behind the wheel of both Roush Cup and Nationwide rides with lofty goals in mind. Results? If the Roush group can get their act together on pit lane, Carl should return to winning ways on both sides. Had it not been for numerous pit lane errors and blown engines, the buff driver would have finished higher with more notches in the Cup win column.
Pre-Season Testing - The first week of scheduled Sprint Cup testing wrapped up last week with Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch topping the single car and drafting charts respectively. Other top runners included Casey Mears, a surprising Jacque Villenueve, Travis Kvapil, Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya topped the Dodge charts with a top 12 run.
Over on the Craftsman truck side of pre-season testing, Eric Darnells Roush-Fenway Ford was fast as were the trucks of Ron Hornaday Jr, Brendan Gaughan, Justin Marks, Jon Wood and Todd Bodine.
From Rumorville - The final Virginia based Cup team, that being Morgan-McClure has closed its doors and released most of the staff late last week after 25 years of NASCAR competition. Without a sponsor, the No. 4 Chevy team can no longer put together any kind of competitive package. This situation has been coming for quite a while. Want to buy a 2007 Chevy stock car or a race shop? Give them a call.
--- Look for Kenny Schrader to pilot a second BAM car in the Daytona 500 and the Bud Shootout with an Evernham Dodge engine under the hood.
--- Ex-Cup, Busch and Truck driver Steve Park has finally landed a ride, only it is with a Busch East team, not one of the top three divisions. He was last seen talking with some owners in Daytona during truck practice.
Did you know? With whom, where and when did the closest finishes occur in NASCAR Cup competition? If you guessed that barn-burner ending between Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch at Darlington in 2003 when they rubbed on each for the final few laps and crossed the line only .002 apart, you are correct. The next closest stat involved Jamie McMurray and Kyle Busch just this past year at Daytona where the two combatants were separated by only .005 at the stripe.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will discuss the results of pre-season Sprint Cup series testing from Daytona and more racing news from around the globe.

2008 Sprint Cup Team Lineups (Part 5)
January 8, 2008 - Here is Round 5 of a six-part series to describe the 2008 Sprint Cup team lineups for next season. There are lots of wholesale changes between drivers, sponsors and car makes, so take notes and enjoy some of my predictions:
No. 49 - John Andretti will return behind the wheel of this BAM Dodge with several associate sponsors backing the team, but still actively looking for a major player to help foot the bills. Dean Johnson will call the shots from atop the box. Results? Just making the races and taking the checkers is the major mission with this one car team.
No. 55 - Michael Waltrip has tabbed himself to continue driving the NAPA Toyota with an eye on making more than half the races, reminiscent of last year. Supposedly, there are more parts and personnel in place to create better results. Perhaps new veteran crew chief Paul Andrews can help this team get back among the top 35 in points. I see this team struggle as long as the current driver remains behind the wheel.
No. 66 - Scott Riggs was let go from the Evernham Racing team, only to have the HAAS Racing Team pick him up. State Water Heaters was recently named as the major sponsor with the very cagey Bootie Barker returning as crew chief. With Hendrick Chevy engines, some technical support and a little luck, this could be the surprise of the non-big team set. Still young, hungry, talented driver with Booties talents creates a good combo.
No. 70 - Jeremy Mayfield gets the nod for this HAAS Chevy ride as teammate to Riggs. Dave Skog has been named crew chief, yet sponsor details are still being worked on. Mayfield needs to get everything he can out of this deal, before his stock heads into oblivion.
No. 77 - Ex-open wheeler Sam Hornish Jr received an early Christmas present when NASCAR informed car owner Roger Penske they would allow the transfer of owner points from ex-champion Kurt Busch over to Hornish. Mobil 1 will adorn the quarters with Chris Carrier as crew chief. It is certainly a distinct advantage over his fellow competitors to make those first five races, but with only qualifying for 2 of 8 races on his own late last year, I believe Hornish will struggle to stay among the top 35.
No. 78 - Joe Nemechek was booted out of his GINN ride late last year, but has landed on his feet with a full-time gig with the Furniture Racing Team Chevy. Its a three-year deal with Jay Guy as crew chief and Hendrick engines under the hood. Making races and finishing will be their major mission.
From Rumorville - Kasey Kahne has entered a not guilty plea to that security guard incident in Florida. That wipes out the scheduled arraignment for Tuesday, yet creates more hearings and a civil trial as well. Stay tuned.
--- Michael McDowell will take over the driving duties once David Reutimann vacates the No. 00 Toyota after five races, moving over to the No. 44 UPS ride when Dale Jarrett steps out into retirement. (Did you catch all that?) McDowell was impressive to finish as last years runner-up in the ARCA series at only 22-years-old. Good choice!
Did you know? That Speed Channel starts nearly daily TV coverage of NASCAR testing on Monday, Jan 7? Thats right, its time to watch, at least taped highlights of the days events. (I know, you feel like youve been out of touch )
Kicking off the 2008 Sprint Cup Series season is sanctioned testing, and naturally, it starts at the big Daytona in Florida. Testing the new COT car at the high bank track is paramount to the chances of a good season.
Check your local TV lineups to see when the daily early evening show is scheduled to air. Dont expect all the cars to have the newest paint schemes as many are usually primer. Well compare notes next week.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will wrap up a preview of this years Sprint Cup team lineup, results from the opening week of Cup testing and more racing news from around the globe.

2008 Sprint Cup Team Lineups (Part 4)
January 1, 2008 - Here is Round 4 of a multi-part series to describe the 2008 Sprint Cup team lineups for next season. There are lots of wholesale changes between drivers, sponsors and car makes, so take notes and enjoy some of my predictions:
No. 27 - Ex-open-wheeler Jacque Villeneuve returns in a full-time mode for Bill Davis Racing in this Toyota. The Canadian driver gained some valuable experience last season with a handful of truck and Cup starts with so-so results. Sponsor questions and personnel have yet to be decided. Getting in all the shows, a couple of top 10 finishes and a top 25 for the season would be a major accomplishment.
No. 31 - A new paint scheme for this A T & T Chevy driven by Jeff Burton is the only major change in store for a team that gelled well in 2007. They will have to gain some consistency in the closing stages of the season to get on top.
No. 38 - David Gilliland will drive this Yates Ford, but with long-time sponsor M&Ms leaving for Toyota, the team has yet to announce this years major backer. They got in all the shows last year, but 28th in points and only two top 10 performances are not
enough to brag about.
No. 40 - Team owner Chip Ganassi adds yet another ex-open wheeler to his staff, this time 2007 Indy 500 winner, Dario Franchitti. The Scotsman got a chance to drive some ARCA, Busch and Cup events last year with nothing to beat his chest about by the time the checkers flew. He will have all the right parts to do well, but the jurys out as to what the results will be. Talented? Yes, in open wheel, but as of yet, I have not seen anything to get excited about. Im also concerned about the driver booted from the seat, David Stremme. All this talented young man has on his plate for 2008 is a part-time Nationwide gig.
No. 41 - Reed Sorenson is back as driver of the Target Dodge with most all of last years part and personnel in place. Six top tens and three top fives is OK, but Sorenson needs to move up to the next level of performance in order to keep his ride.
No. 42 Juan Pablo Montoya surprised many doubters, myself included. The transplanted F-1 driver won the Cup roadcourse race as well as the Busch race in Mexico, yet most Cup finishes were less than exciting. The Columbian shoe has led the way in showing an ex-open-wheeler set a decent performance can be achieved. Well see if his stats can improve this year.
No. 43 Bobby Labonte will pilot the Kings Dodge once again, with Cheerios sponsorship still well in place. The ex-champion gets a new crew chief this year with Jeff Meendering moving over from the Jeff Gordon team as car chief. Between moving into new digs in Mooresville and a new crew chief, sounds like a good combo to me. Wouldnt it be good to see that No. 43 back in the winners circle sometime?
No. 44 David Reutimann will start the year in this Waltrip Toyota before moving over to the No. 88 UPS ride full-time. The final word on who or what will happen after the first five races has yet to be determined for the No. 44.
No. 45 Kyle Petty returns behind the wheel of this Marathon/Wells Fargo Dodge, but theres no telling how much longer this arrangement will continue. It would probably be a safe bet however to realize the son of the King will probably hand over the driving duties to someone younger and hungrier for results such as Chad McCumbee. Its time.
No. 48 This is definitely the leading candidate for the if it aint broke, dont fix it department. Jimmie Johnson returns as two-time Cup champ with many feeling No. 3 is right around the corner. Lowes is certainly back as is crew chief Chad Knauss. Can he do it for a third time in a row? Drop me a line and let me know? My opinion? No. Statistically the odds are against it and I believe it will hinge on two factors .1. How well Dale Jr will perform and 2. How well the Gibbs Toyotas will affect the Hendrick juggernaut.
Did you know? There are no fewer than 20, yes, I said 20 Sprint Cup crew chief changes for next season. Talk about needing a score card to keep things straight between the crew chief changes, driver swaps along with sponsor and paint scheme changes, it will take some serious note taking to know whos where for 2008.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will continue with Part 5 of the 2008 Cup lineup and more racing news from around the globe.

2008 Sprint Cup Team Lineups (Part 3)
December 28, 2007 - Here is Round 3 of a multi-part series to describe the 2008 Sprint Cup team lineups for next season. There are lots of wholesale changes between drivers, sponsors and car makes, so take notes and enjoy some of my predictions:
No. 17 - Matt Kenseth returns behind the wheel of this Roush-Fenway Ford Fusion with most parts and personnel in place with one big exception. His long-time crew chief Robbie Reiser has been named General Manager of Team Operations and will no longer call the shots atop the pitbox. Chip Bolin takes over and time will tell if they can continue with the kind of impressive results exhibited over the final weeks of 2007.
No. 18 - Kyle Busch will slide in behind the wheel of this M & Ms Toyota for Gibbs Racing with much anticipation to land that first win for the Japanese manufacturer. Interstate Batteries will be the primary sponsor for six shows with the candy maker backing the remainder of the season. I look for this team to be among the top ten by seasons end .IF they can come out of the box fairly quick.
No. 19 - Virginia driver Elliott Sadler returns to action in the Gillett Evernham Dodge ride, yet with a totally new paint scheme showcasing Best Buys as bill payer for 15 shows. The remaining backing has yet to be determined. Elliott remained among the top 35 last year with some signs of brilliance, but needs to step up their level of performance to be among the Chasers.
No. 20 - Even though the team won races and made the Chase, their overall performance came up short to win a third title.
Driver Tony Stewart returns to a new item under the hood Toyota. I predict the Japanese maker will wind up in victory lane for the first time in 08 with a Gibbs driver behind the wheel. Stewart needs to stop running into other cars and pointing the blame at the other guy. DNFs dont win titles. Home Depot remains the primary sponsor with a rather plain orange paint scheme.
No. 21 - The Wood Brothers Ford will have several drivers behind the wheel of the Little Debbie racer, including veteran Bill Elliott, Aussie Marcos Ambrose and a few others yet to be named. The snack cake backer has signed on for 18 races while the team looks for additional funding. Making the shows is the major mission here until landing among the top 35.
No. 22 - Dave Blaney is set to wheel this CAT Toyota, showing strong moves in the late stages of 2007. The veteran racer can usually get in the show, is a good spokesperson and is easy on equipment. A top 20 in points is realistic especially if Tommy Baldwin Jr. is in charge.
No. 24 - Jeff Gordon returns behind the wheel of the Dupont Chevy for the 16th year. The four-time champion has it all in place and despite averaging 5.1 finishes in the Chase, he came up oh so close to a fifth title behind bud Jimmie Johnson. The 48 team has to be his main target for 2008 in order to land that next title.
No. 26 - Larry Carter returns as crew chief for this Jamie McMurray Roush Fenway Ford. The multi-sponsored racer is headed up by Crown Royal, Irwin Tools and so on. Once again, even a top shelf team needs multi-sponsor deals to pay the bills. It used to run $10 million to operate a Cup team. Now budgets are exceeding $20 million to fund a top team. Thats usually, eight mil from this backer, four mil from another and so on .until you come to the $15 to $25 million rumored to back the big timers.
No. 28 - This famous Yates Ford number returns with Travis Kvapil as their new driver. More details such as color scheme and major sponsor have yet to be determined. Kvapil deserves this second shot at the bigs with good performances in the trucks. Making all the shows and a top 25 in points would not be unrealistic.
No. 29 - Kevin Harvick struggled in the Chase to be among the top ten let alone a top three possibility. The bright yellow Shell is back on the quarters with all of the other Childress Race Team ingredients in place. All three Childress Chevys made the Chase, yet sophomore Clint Bowyer topped his teammates.
From Rumorville - Kasey Kahne will face charges of misdemeanor battery against a 62-year-old security guard at the last race at Homestead, Florida. Seems the guard wouldnt allow Kahne access to his motor home while in full driver garb without credentials. The guard was presumably pushed aside and fell. The Dodge driver will appear in court on Jan. 8, 2008. The guard is looking for a $15,000 settlement for pain and suffering and medical bills. I cant wait to hear the rest of this nonsense.
Did you know? What is the winningest car number among the NASCAR Cup ranks? If you guessed the famed Richard Petty No. 43, youd be correct. For some 198 trips to the winners circle, a No. 43 car took the top spot. Second on the charts (180) is the No. 11 with drivers such as Ned Jarrett, Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip behind the wheel.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will continue with Part 4 of the 2008 Cup lineup and more racing news from around the globe.

2008 Sprint Cup Team Lineups (Part 2)
December 18, 2007 - Here is Round 2 of a multi-part series to describe the 2008 Sprint Cup team lineups for next season. There are lots of wholesale changes between drivers, sponsors and car makes, so take notes and enjoy some of my predictions:
No. 7 - In what has to be an uphill battle at times, Robby Gordon returns as one of the very few single car driver/owner teams with any level of success. His 26th place points finish is an accomplishment unto itself as bigger teams failed to make many more races than the single one missed by RGM. Look for Jim Beam and Menards to return to his Ford Fusion.
No. 8 - It will take a while for fans to get used to seeing Mark Martin and Aric Almirola driving this numbered racer instead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. The sponsor is Army and the colors are very different from the customary bright red of Budweiser. Martin will drive two dozen shows and the aspiring Almirola will drive the rest. Martin drove about the same amount last year, nearly won the Daytona 500, finished 27th in points and won nearly $4 million. Not too shabby for a part-timer. Almirola couldnt ask for a better mentor.
No. 9 - Pretty boy Kasey Kahne returns behind the wheel of this GEM Dodge with Budweiser on the quarters. Hell have to step up to the plate of consistency to gain a spot in the Chase, something hes only done once.
No. 10 - Open wheeler Patrick Carpentier will fill this GEM Dodge this year with Komatsu Equipment a possible sponsor and Mike Shiplett as team director. How will this ex-open wheeler do? Hell be lucky to finish among the top 25 in points and may get a top 10 here and there, more likely on the roadcourses.
No. 11 - Other than changing from Chevy to Toyota, everything is in place for Denny Hamlin to pilot this Gibbs racer. Performance? That depends how quickly the team can gel with the new equipment. Chase? Maybe.
No. 12 - Ryan Newman returns behind the wheel of this Alltel Dodge with Penske as captain of the ship. Newman comes off a so-so season and needs to get right out of the gate with results to make the Chase.
No. 15 - Paul Menard continues with the DEI lineup and should move up in the charts with a guaranteed spot in the first five races. Menards, Peak and Energizer return as backers in the familiar yellow livery.
No 16 - 3M will pay the majority of the bills for this Roush-Fenway Greg Biffle driven Ford Fusion. If Biffles equipment and luck could turn around, hed have a better shot at returning to top contender status. DISH and Lumber Liquidators may join the fun later in the season.
From Rumorville - NASCAR has given permission for Penske Racing to transfer the owners points of Kurt Busch to newbee teammate Sam Hornish Jr for next season. That will ensure Sammy to make at least the first five shows with Kurt being able to fall back on his champions provisional status should he fall short during qualifying. What do I think? Ridiculous. No one should have that kind of guarantee without earning the spot.
--- Look for reigning champ Jimmie Johnson to run in three Nationwide series races next year with Lowes on the doors.
--- It does appear there will be changes in qualifying for next year by having those outside the top 35 attempt to qualify first. Is this a fix to the current problem of who gets in the shows? Not by a long shot. I still maintain the fastest 42 should qualify with one spot left for champions provisional or the highest in points standings at that time. What do you think? Drop me a line.
Did you know? Which driver used the most Lucky Dog awards this past year? If you guessed Bobby Labonte in the No. 43 with 13 times, youd be correct. Paul Menard and Kyle Petty were right behind with 11 each. All time Lucky Dog recipient? That would be Kyle Petty with 48 and Jeff Green next at 34. Like the Dog deal? I dont. Why are they giving someone a whole lap back entertainment?
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will continue with Part 3 of the 2008 Cup lineup and more racing news from around the globe.

2008 Sprint Cup Team Lineups (Part 1)
December 11, 2007 - Here is the first of a multi-part series to describe the 2008 Sprint Cup team lineups for next season. There are lots of wholesale changes between drivers, sponsors and car makes, so take notes and enjoy some of my predictions:
No. 00 - This ride will feature a number of driver and sponsor combos, a situation arising more and more due to the ever-increasing cost of sponsorship. David Reutimann will start the year in this MWR Toyota with Burger King (maybe) on the quarters. After the first five races, Reutimann will move over to the No. 44 UPS ride in which Dale Jarrett will retire from. Rookies Josh Wise and Michael McDowell will share the driving duties, but dont rule out David Stremme on a full-time basis. Sounds complicated? You bet.
No. 01 - Regan Smith heads up this years rookie-of-the-year lineup in this DEI Chevy with a possibility of Coors on the sides. This young driver has much to prove and just may have the tools to complete the mission of success.
No. 07 - Here is the first of several scenarios that fit into the category, if it aint broke, dont fix it. Clint Bowyer returns behind the wheel with most everything in place, including backer Jack Daniels decals and Gil Martin as crew chief. After all, one win and third in the points is a working program. Can they repeat the performance this year? If this driver can step up on the consistency wagon yes.
No. 1 - Martin Truex Jrs stock certainly rose in 2007 and now that Dale Jr has left the building will head up the DEI Cup effort. All of the current ingredients will return for this year and their performance level has still not hit full stride.
No. 2 - Kurt Busch was on a role in the closing stages of 2007 with his Penske Miller Lite ride. If they could come out of the box stronger, they could very well be a force to be reckoned with by years end.
No. 4 - State Water Heaters will return to back this Morgan-McClure Chevy, but many of the other parts of the Virginia team have not been finalized, including the driver. Results? This team would do well just to make every race, something they surely didnt do in 07. (Missed 20 races.)
No. 5 - Hendrick driver Casey Mears returns to work, but with a totally different paint scheme, sponsor and crew. Carquest and Kelloggs will back this team with Alan Gustafson calling the shots from atop the pit box. Results? Id give Casey yet another mark in the win column before years end. Chase? Not this year.
No. 6 - David Regan will be back in the saddle in this Roush ride after a pretty good rookie season, finishing as runner-up in the final R-O-Y stats. With a 23rd place finish in the points and two top fives and three top tens, I look for this talented young driver to step up to the next level of performance stats.
--- The Craftsman truck banquet saw Ron Hornaday collect a record amount of winnings, some $1.1 million in all. The event was aired two weeks afterwards (dont know why) and saw a late night talk show format in interviewing each driver. The comedic talent was better than David Spade and the live band was a bit over the top for me.
--- The final Busch series banquet was held Friday night with Carl Edwards brining home more than $2.5 million for the season. More details next week after the tape delayed airing this week.
From Rumorville - Looks like Craftsman is calling it a day on sponsoring the truck series. Thats right, after the 2008 season, the founding sponsor is stepping aside as the primary series backer. Of the three premiere racing series however, I think this will be the easiest one to secure another sponsor as their TV ratings have increased over the past few years while the others have slipped.
--- Kurt Busch will join Jimmie Johnson as one of the Cup drivers competing in this yearss Rolex 24 sports car race at Daytona in January. Busch will make his second left and right appearance, this time with Helio Castroneves and newbee Ryan Briscoe.
Did you know? For the first time ever, the famed indoor Chile Bowl race will be aired live on TV although it will cost you $24.95 on a pay-per-view basis to watch the likes of Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne wheel their midget racers around the diminutive indoor oval. Look for the event on Jan. 12.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will continue with Part 2 of the 2008 Cup lineup and more racing news from around the globe.

Cup Champs Pick up BIG Checks
December 4, 2007 - After a busy week of making live appearances on network TV and radio, this years top Cup drivers collected some big money at the annual banquet at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.
Topping the list, of course, was this years champion, Jimmie Johnson, awarded more than $15 million for the seasons work. The six-year veteran now has nearly $60 million in career earnings. Not too shabby, eh?
Although, when you think about it, it took $15 - $20 million to get there (win title) with sponsor backing.
The old expression being, how do win a million dollars in racing? .start with $3 million.
This years runner-up, Jeff Gordon picked up a $3 million dollar check, bringing his 2007 total in excess of $10 million and his career earnings to over $90 million, more than double Dale Earnhardts career numbers.
Even second year driver Clint Bowyer wound up with $6.5 million for the season, his racing stock surely raised from late season performances.
The overall banquet was the usual black tie affair, often stiff in audience response to comments made on stage. This years comedic talent, David Spade and singer Kelly Clarkson were a step up from years past.
Most of the drivers appeared more comfortable than prior years in accepting their accolades and financial rewards. Tony Stewart in particular got a few more laughs for clever comments than others.
I found it a little odd that superstars Stewart, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards attended the event, sans lady friend of some kind. For Kyle, I guess after last years naming his brothers wife instead of his girlfriend at the time, had something to do with it.
The Busch series drivers awards banquet takes center stage this Friday night at the Portofino Bay Hotel in Orlando, FL where Carl Edwards will pick up his first NASCAR championship.
The rest of the Busch pack will pick up their awards as well, including Jason Leffler, Stephen Leicht and so on.
Being the No. 2 premiere series, dont expect the kind of over-the-top ceremonies the Cuppers experience, but it is worth watching on TV Tuesday night .yes, thats right, Tuesday, not Friday as it is shown in a tape delay format. Well compare notes next week.
From Rumorville - Im still hearing some talk about pony car bodies for the Busch, I mean Nationwide series starting in 2009. Ford is all excited about the possibility of running their famed Mustang, Dodge is cool with using the new retro Challenger, yet Chevy is reluctant about the new Camaro and Toyotas Solora might not be around by 2009.
I think the idea of creating a car that is very different than a Cup car is definitely the way to go. For the manufacturers, the idea of win on Sunday, sell on Monday could come back in vogue. Stay tuned.
--- For the fifth consecutive year, Dale Earnhardt Jr won the fans most popular driver award no surprise. This driver will surely be under the microscope next year and be expected to win races and at least make the Chase. If he does not, the excuse train has left the station. He has joined the best organization right now in Cup and even managed to take along his favorite crew chief, Tony Eury Jr.
--- Kyle Busch and multi-winner Steven Wallace will not exactly be welcomed back to the famed annual Snowball Derby in Florida after this weekends happenings. It appears both drivers cars were found to be illegal and their reactions were not of a professional racecar driver. Busch expressed his displeasure in only ways he can, spouting off at the mouth and Wallaces car was found light across the scales. He was later caught attempting to put sockets in his pockets to add weight. Talk about juvenile .Rusty must be so proud.
Did you know? With all this talk about what todays Cup drivers have earned for just one season, do you know what some of the all-time greats amassed during their storied careers? Like .Richard The King Petty put together 35 years of racing with seven titles, only to earn $8.5 million TOTAL! Or David Pearson with 105 wins earned a meager $2.8 million for 27 years of racing! How times have changed!
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will review the Busch series banquet from Florida and start to discuss the 2008 team rundowns for the Cup series along with more racing news from around the globe.

Cup Champions set sights on New York
November 27, 2007 - With the final laps in the record books, the top ten in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series will be spending most of the upcoming week in New York City, where area residents will get a chance to see them in person.
The busy schedule includes trips to radio stations, TV appearances, their actual race cars in parade formation through the streets of Manhattan, all culminating with Friday nights awards banquet at the famed Waldorf Astoria.
While champion Jimmie Johnsons duties start early in the week with radio and TV appearances, the rest of the top ten join the festivities on Wednesday with the top ten cars hitting the streets of Manhattan starting at 44th Street and Broadway, winding up at 7th and 43rd, right in front of the Hard Rock Café.
Do the fans love it? Oh, yeah. Do the drivers rev up the cars and leave rubber here and there? Oh, yeah.
The 1.5 mile journey starts about 8:30 a.m. and ends about an hour later and yes, the TV cameras will be rolling.
Thursdays lineup includes guest appearances by the top ten drivers at the Hard Rock Café with a special event named the Aflac Fan Fest. Here, local fans can meet and greet the drivers and take part in live trivia and prize giveaways, see this years Nextel Cup and much more. The fun continues through Friday.
Friday mornings lineup has the drivers take part in the famous Myers Brothers Breakfast where more awards and photo opportunities take place.
The final tribute of the week takes place at the very fancy Waldorf where the driver speeches and large monetary awards are given.
I personally look forward to the driver remarks and remember, most of the night time event is aired live on TV. Some drivers are very comfortable in front of the camera and others simple stumble through their acceptance speech. Some use notes and yet others use the teleprompters.
Well compare notes next week as to how the whole affair came off. Its usually amusing with some memorable lines.
Also think about the possibility of a new location or format. Drop me an idea like Dress shirts and jeans in Kansas for the awards, then, move the affair to a local track with a no holds barred 10-lap rental car race, $50 grand to the winner. Entertaining
Rumorville - Besides the ARCA series having several dirt tracks dates on their 2008 menu, the popular series will hold a 500-mile race at the newly re-opened Rockingham Speedway and a 2.3 mile road course event in Millville, New Jersey. Sounds like some good stuff to me! Look for a handful of Cuppers to join the fun.
--- Looks like billionaire and multi-track owner Bruton Smith has played his cards correctly in getting what he wanted at Lowes Motor Speedway. When the Concord officials originally voted down his ability to invest a large sum of money into adding a drag racing facility to the current mecca of racing, Smith started sniffing around for another location and move LMS as we know it. When you have that kind of money, you can pretty much do what you want.
Concord officials have not only changed their minds about the whole idea, but have now offered serious tax incentives, streets to be named after Smith and more. So, at this point, Smiths plans to expand the facility into part of the drag racing circuit will be put into motion.
Did you know? In six years of racing among the Cup ranks, Jimmie Johnson has never finished lower than fifth in points, including two runner ups in 2003 and 2004. Pretty amazing, huh? That is certainly an impressive record by any standards. At only 32 years old, two titles and 33 wins to date, this driver is well on his way to a famed history among the stock car set.
Thats it for this week. Next weeks RWR will review the Cup banquet, discuss the upcoming Busch affair and more racing news from around the globe.
